ArtCraft AI Creative Suite Is Trending on GitHub

ArtCraft is a free, open-source AI creative suite that gained 2,103 GitHub stars in a day — one of five Adobe-style apps from the same tiny team.

A small team with a GitHub handle, not a press office, just put five open-source creative apps into the world: a Photoshop clone, a Lightroom clone, a Premiere clone, an early experimental build, and a flagship desktop app. The flagship is now sitting on GitHub's daily trending page, gaining 2,103 stars in a single day on its way to a current total of 7,851.

That app is ArtCraft — a free, open-source AI creative suite for images and video — and its own README calls it "the IDE for interactive AI image and video creation."

What ArtCraft's AI creative suite actually does

Most AI image tools are a text box and a generate button. ArtCraft's pitch, straight from its README, is that you build the shot first: "compose in 2D, stage scenes in 3D, and choose the models that fit your work." Only then do you generate — turning prompting into what the README calls "crafting with visual tools for precise, repeatable results."

Under the hood it's a model router as much as an editor. Per the README, it ships a 62-model native catalog for images, video, music and sound, 3D meshes, and worlds, and layers in direct integrations with Grok Imagine and Grok Video, Midjourney image generation, OpenAI's Sora 1, Sora 2, and GPT Image 1, and World Labs' Marble for Gaussian-splat world generation — with Kling, Google, Runway, and Luma listed as planned.

It's the same "one app, many providers" bet that made tools like OpenRouter useful for text models, applied here to image and video generation instead.

The app itself is downloadable now: stable releases for Windows and macOS, with Linux available only as a build-from-source option per the README. The current tagged version is v0.41.0, shipped September 26.

It's one piece of a bigger, stranger open-source Adobe-alternative bet

Here's what makes this more than a single trending repo: the ArtCraft GitHub organization — handle storytold, bio "Open Source Tools and Models for Creatives," 14.7k followers — is pinning six repos at once, five of them creative apps (plus a shared backend-services project), and more than one of them has already gone viral independently of ArtCraft itself.

PhotoCraft describes itself as "an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop, rebuilt in pure Rust" and has already picked up 26.7k stars on its own, dual-licensed MIT/Apache-2.0 — though its own README is upfront that it's "in early alpha" and "not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work."

The org's other pinned repos, LightCraft and FilmCraft, are described on the same organization page as clean-room alternatives to Lightroom and Premiere Pro, respectively. There's also ArtCraft-X, described in its own README as "a minimal desktop app for AI creation" and flagged "Early Experimental Release" — an earlier, lighter prototype that the team kept public rather than deleting once the main ArtCraft app superseded it.

Taken together, this isn't one app chasing a trend — it's a team trying to rebuild the entire Adobe-shaped stack as open-source software with generative models wired directly into each piece, and shipping the pieces in parallel rather than waiting for a single finished suite.

The traction is real, and recent

The commit history on the main branch shows the current app effectively restarted on September 11, 2026, with a commit titled "ArtCraft Desktop (fresh start)" — meaning the version trending today is well under a month old as a codebase, even though the org and its sibling repos predate it.

Since then, the project has merged work at a fast clip: the pull request tracker shows 1,882 total pull requests against the repo, with only 11 still open and 1,871 already closed. Open issues sit at 64 — recent ones include reports like "EffectCraft - timeline scrubbing and interactions slow and not realtime responsive," the kind of concrete, specific bug report you'd expect from people actually running the app, not just starring it.

That volume of merged work in under a month, on an app that's also pulling thousands of new stars in a single day, points to a small team (the org's People page shows two listed members) that's both building fast and getting real usage faster than most solo or small-team projects do.

It's free, but it's not MIT — read the license

ArtCraft ships under what its own LICENSE.md calls the "ArtCraft License (WIP)," and it says plainly that it isn't yet a formal legal license. The terms that are there are specific: you don't have to pay to use the app, you can "back up, copy, modify, compile, and use the code for your own private personal purposes," and whatever you generate with it is yours — "generated assets are yours."

But it's not a permissive open-source license in the usual sense. You can't sell the software commercially or present it as your own, you can't fork it to build a rival AI image or video product, and if you do fork it you can't strip out its community links, donation links, or paid model services. You also can't use the ArtCraft name, logo, or mascot to promote your own business without permission. That's a stricter bargain than an actually permissive open-source creative tool like Excalidraw, which ships under a plain MIT license with no such carve-outs on commercial forks.

That last clause — "paid model services" — is the only hint in the whole repo that there's a monetization plan attached to some of the third-party model integrations; the README itself states no pricing anywhere, so what that actually costs end users is something only the live app would show.

What's still missing

Nothing here is a finished, audited product. The license is explicitly a work in progress, not a final legal document. PhotoCraft, the most-starred sibling project, calls itself "early alpha" and lists a batch of missing tools as gaps before it could replace a professional workflow.

ArtCraft-X, the earlier prototype, is still public and still labeled experimental, which means anyone searching the org cold can land on the wrong, half-finished app if they don't check which repo is current. And Linux users get no downloadable build at all — only a build-from-source path, per the README.

The takeaway

ArtCraft is a cleaner example of a pattern worth watching: a small team shipping multiple open-source "reimplementation" projects in parallel — not one polished app, but a whole stack — and letting GitHub's trending page do the marketing. It's the same shape of story as Treg's unreleased API gateway climbing to 3,100+ stars in days or i-have-adhd's three-week run to #1 on trending — a free, no-marketing-budget project outcompeting funded launches for attention. If you're a working creative curious about model-routing tools like this, download the current stable release rather than the older ArtCraft-X prototype, read the license before you build anything commercial on top of it, and expect the kind of rough edges — slow timeline scrubbing, no Linux binary — that come with a codebase this young moving this fast.
